Chantal Brière
Registered Social Worker & Psychotherapist
MSW, RSW
Registered Social Worker providing counselling services to children, youth, adults, and families.
I approach all clients from a strengths-based, client-centered framework, tailoring therapy specifically to you and the people you care for.
About
I believe that you are the expert of your own life, and I am here to walk with you through life’s challenges and support you in identifying and reaching your therapeutic goals.

I have worked directly with people and families of all ages, various backgrounds, and communities in a supportive role since 2015 in a variety of settings. I currently work with families at CHEO. I am a Registered Social Worker with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) and am also a Child & Youth Counsellor (CYC). I completed my Master of Social Work (MSW) at Carleton University, where I studied within a clinical concentration. I am insured and bonded.

Because of my background as a CYC, I believe in incorporating tangible activities and elements within talk therapy, such as building rapport through play and client-identified enjoyable activities. I aim to support clients in identifying and building upon their strengths. I will tailor therapy to your specific interests, identified challenges, needs, and goals. Tailoring treatment may look like working with you or your child outdoors, in a space you/they are more comfortable in, providing sessions in person in my office, or virtually via secure connection.
I practice from a client-centered approach and utilize elements of Narrative Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Attachment-Based Therapy, Dialectical-Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Emotion-Focused Therapy and Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFT & EFFT), Solutions-Focused Therapy, Gottman Couples Therapy Method, and Brainspotting (BSP). I work with all families – I am LGBTQI2S+ inclusive.
I encourage my clients to provide me with regular feedback on the therapeutic process. I am happy to provide direct referrals to other therapists in the event that you do not find I am a good fit for you or your family. The therapy process is for you – it’s important to advocate for yourself, and I am happy to support you in doing so.

Frequently Asked Questions
What can therapy do for me?

We all experience various life stressors and crises – they can be unavoidable, and none of us are immune to challenges. We are not alone in feeling the way that we feel, as much as it can sometimes seem like we are. Sometimes we need an empathetic listener.

Many of us experience:
-
Mental health challenges
-
Anxiety
-
Depression
-
Trauma
-
Suicidal thoughts or self-harming behaviour
-
Lack of motivation
-
Parenting challenges
-
Relationship stress, separation, divorce, or other significant relationship changes
-
Feeling stuck in a rut with seemingly nowhere to go
-
Difficulty processing our emotions or resorting to a default emotion (like anger) that causes us enormous stress or relationship difficulties

As a therapist, I am here to support you in navigating these challenges by providing a confidential space to talk, explore, and learn new coping strategies. Therapy is an excellent space that allows us to discuss topics we might not feel ready to talk about with others.

What can therapy do for my child(ren)?
Children and youth experience rapid periods of change, cognitively, developmentally, and physically, which can often exacerbate challenges they may be facing. Therapy can be used to support your child in better understanding their emotions, thoughts, actions, behaviours, and their relationships. I aim to support children and youth in exploring what has and what hasn’t worked for them in the past, so that they can begin to identify coping strategies that are effective for them.

Individual counselling for children and youth can support with:
-
Experiences of trauma or abuse
-
Mental health challenges
-
Suicidal thoughts or self-harm behaviour
-
Difficulties with emotional or behavioural regulation
-
Anxiety
-
Depression
-
Stress
-
Adjusting to big life changes – parental separation or divorce, loss of a loved one, including pets, moving
-
Peer conflicts or bullying
-
Self-esteem and self-confidence difficulties

I also provide advocacy services for children and youth and can liaise with your child’s community-based providers in the event that extra supports are needed. Children thrive when they feel supported by family, peers, and community. I am here to help with that.

What does family therapy look like?

If you have never engaged in family therapy before, it can feel like a daunting process! I aim to make the process as transparent and comfortable as possible for all members of your family.
Family therapy can support you in working on:
-
Parent-child communication
-
High conflict relationships
-
Increasing attachment among family members
-
Navigating separation or divorce
-
Attending to your child or partner’s emotions as well as having your family members attend to yours

It is often important to hear everyone’s perspectives before getting the family together as a whole so that I am in the position to advocate for all members’ needs and goals. Family therapy includes some aspects of mediation. I aim to support everyone in coming to better understand one another and communicate more effectively with each other.

Family therapy is fluid. It will change as the process unfolds. This may mean that one family member feels they need more sessions than another, or perhaps the focus is on working solely with the parents moving forward or solely with the child(ren). The process is always tailored to the family and is organized with the family’s input and consent.
Do you offer a sliding fee scale?
